The Extraordinary Happenings of Peter Oddfellow: THe Old Umbrella
The Extraordinary Happenings of Peter Oddfellow: The Old Umbrella by Mark Dorey is part of the wider Extraordinary Happening of Peter Oddfellow series. In this first book, ‘The Old Umbrella’ we are introduced to Peter Oddfellow and join him on his adventure into a strange new world with the help of a rather useless looking umbrella.
This is a very imaginative fantasy novel that I think will be a great read for teens and adults alike. 14-year old Peter doesn’t feel like he fits in, and after waking up in hospital with two broken legs and amnesia he doesn’t expect to be transported on an adventure with a motley crew of friends. I really enjoyed this book. I found all of the characters, their clashing personalities that still managed to come together when needed, entertaining and funny. I particularly liked Mulg and found his disgust at his feline form quite funny.
The events of the novel, while Peter is in a world we would all find familiar, is set in the 1980s, which I found to be an interesting element and made the story feel more traditional to me. A little bit Narnia-esque, ‘The Old Umbrella’ leaves everything perfectly ready for the next book in the series ‘The Red Leaf’, and I think that readers enchanted by this book will have found a great new series to follow. I would recommend this book to fans of teen and YA fantasy adventures.
From initial inspiration to final published book took 13 years.
This adventure took 16 re-writes to get it just right (or should that be 'write')!
Peter Oddfellow was originally 110,000 words in the first draft, but gradually whittled down to 76,000 words by the 16th draft, and yet by going through the book over and over has meant that there's so much more detail in the finished story than when it was first started!
This is a great read for Young Adults and older readers too - just take a look at Callie and her Mum's book reviews below ...
I really enjoyed this book. It really had me hooked. My favourite character was Bodgcar and I thought it was really funny when he started pulling things out of all his pockets. I’m really looking forward to the next book as it ended too soon. I need to know what happens next!

Hooked From the First Page
I picked up The Extraordinary Happenings of Peter Oddfellow: The Old Umbrella, as my daughter had left it on the sofa. I read the first page and that was it, I was hooked.
It was addictive from the first page. The book had a brilliant mixture of wit, humour and danger and is a great read. The characters are easy to envisage and are brilliantly written. In short this book took me 2 days to finish from cover to cover. I couldn't put it down.
My daughter couldn't put this book down either. She has always been a bit of a book worm and the Harry Potter's and your book are among her favourites!
Definitely a 5 star read.

An intriguing adventure of kooky characters travelling into otherworldly realms. The reader is enticed into a world full of excitement, danger & surprises sprinkled with enough humour, friendship & love that also makes this book a heart warming read.

I generally really loved the whole book altogether, but the suspense and wanting to find out what happens next was what kept me reading on. I can't wait for The Red Leaf to come out!

I found this to be a really good descriptive book. My favourite character was Bodgcar, he was a funny character and in the times when every thing seemed hopeless he always had something in his coat that would fix the problem. All the main characters Twics, Eliza, Silver Flame, Mulg, Uncle Freddie and Bodgcar all played an amazing part. There was a lot happening in the story which meant I never got bored and always wanted to read on. The story telling and active plot made it all fit together perfectly. This is one of the best books I've read, by far. Peter is a Harry Potter and Renn K'orr is Voldemort.
